Jimbo Fisher calls ACC ‘premier conference in college football’

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher may have rattled a few cages at ACC Media Days, particularly those who believe the SEC is the best conference in the nation.

“I think we’ve established ourselves as the premier conference in college football,” Fisher said at ACC media days on Thursday, per ESPN.

Though his opinion is certainly biased, we can hardly blame Fisher for thinking his conference is the tops in college football. And quite honestly, while the SEC has been dominant for a very long time, you might be able to successfully argue that Fisher is right.

Coming into the 2017 college football season, there are a number of ACC teams that figure to be big players in the national landscape at the end of the campaign.

Florida State might end up being No. 1 in the preseason polls over Alabama, and Nick Saban expects this to be the case.

Saban also had some very complimentary things to say about FSU during SEC Media Days as well.

“Florida State, especially, is built like an SEC team. … You know, like our teams,” Saban said. “You think of Florida State, you think of fast, explosive players — which they have a lot of. But they also are big, physical, play great defense, tough.”

Clemson has been a powerhouse for a few years now. Louisville is not to be trifled with and possesses the current Heisman winner, quarterback Lamar Jackson. Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Miami, Pittsburgh and others are all going to be very tough every week.

Even looking back at last year, there were three teams in the ACC that finished with records below .500. That means 11 of the 14 teams in the conference finished above .500. That’s pretty darn impressive, especially when you consider the SEC only had nine of its 14 teams finish above .500.

It’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, but it does show just how darn good the ACC is as a whole.

So while SEC fans and coaches will certainly disagree with Fisher’s statement, it’s not one we can dismiss out of hand.
