Darren McFadden missed Cowboys’ charter to California for training camp

Darren McFadden

Dallas Cowboys running back Darren McFadden had to pay his own way to California after failing to arrive on time for the team charter Saturday.

According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, McFadden called Cowboys officials to let them know he was running late as the team prepared to leave Saturday afternoon, bound for Oxnard, Calif. However, the running back won’t face a fine as long as he arrives on time (2 p.m. PT on Sunday) to report for training camp, per the report.

Instead of flying with his teammates in the relative lap of luxury on the team charter, McFadden had to purchase a commercial ticket.

This isn’t really that big a deal, though as a veteran McFadden should know better.

It’s perhaps perceived as a problem, however, considering David Irving — suspended the first four games of the season — failed to report (subject to $40,000 fine) and rookie Jourdan Lewis is missing the first two days of camp while dealing with his domestic abuse trial.

The Cowboys might have to rely a bit more on McFadden than they’d like this year, especially early. If Ezekiel Elliott ends up suspended, then McFadden is likely the team’s best fall-back option as a short-term starter. Though he was barely used last year, McFadden rushed for 1,089 yards for the ‘Boys in 2015.

One thing we know for certain is that the Cowboys are always dealing with some sort of drama. Thankfully, McFadden missing the team charter can be considered a minor issue.
