Report: Khalil Mack will have to wait until next year for extension

Khalil Mack

The Oakland Raiders have been busy locking up their young talent. It started with signing franchisee quarterback Derek Carr to a record-breaking contract earlier in June. Then, on Thursday, the Raiders locked up young guard Gabe Jackson to an alarmingly lucrative contract.

As potential Super Bowl contenders for the foreseeable future, it looks like the Raiders’ focus is on keeping its core group together. And for good reason. Here’s a team that posted a 12-4 record this past season. There’s so much room for growth on this young roster.

Unfortunately, by handing out $180-plus million to Carr and Jackson, the Raiders will now have to wait until next year to sign reigning Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack to an extension.

This isn’t necessarily the end of the world. Oakland has already picked up the fifth-year option on Mack’s rookie contract. This means he’s not slated to become a free agent until following the 2018 campaign.

Mack, 26, is coming off a 2017 season that saw him rack up 73 tackles, 11 sacks and five forced fumbles. When he does agree to a long-term extension, the pass rusher will surely set a new market for his position. This will include a total contract value north of the $114 million Von Miller is currently making with the Denver Broncos.
