Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his wife, Gene, have gained an audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican. The couple have been included in a group of 41 people to visit the pontiff on Wednesday as they vacation in Rome, according to Michael Granberry of the Dallas Morning News.
“The Joneses are traveling with a contingent from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and that group — 41 people in all — will meet with the pope, Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple confirmed Tuesday.”
Jones, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer, will be joined by six previous inductees, whose names were not revealed. Also included in the group is the hall of fame board of trustees, of which Jones is a member, per the report.
We’re pretty sure the term, “Hail Mary” will be thrown into the conversation at some point during the meeting. Former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach famously coined the football term Hail Mary in a post-game interview following a last-second touchdown pass in the playoffs back in 1975.
In an unrelated but interesting bit of news, Jones will be joined on the stage in Canton by his former head coach, Jimmy Johnson, who will be presenting legendary defensive end Jason Taylor.
