Enes Kanter claims his father was arrested in Turkey

Enes Kanter

The unfortunate drama surrounding Oklahoma City Thunder center Enes Kanter and his home country of Turkey may have taken another turn on Friday. Kanter, like he has done throughout what is becoming an increasingly scary situation, took to Twitter to voice his concerns over the government of Turkey.

Though, this time, the former lottery pick announced some rather disturbing news relating to his father.

Remember, Kanter was held by authorities at an airport in Romania last month after Turkey cancelled his passport. It was part of a larger attempt by the Turkish government to quiet those who oppose the seemingly dictatorial regime of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Even after Kanter made it back to the United States, Turkey was not done attempting to quiet him. The government issued a warrant for his arrest — claiming the Thunder center was part of a terrorist organization (more on that here).

As of right now, there’s no confirmation that Kanter’s father is in Turkish custody. If that is the case, our thoughts and prayers go out to Enes and his entire family during these most difficult times. This can’t be an easy situation for Kanter to deal with, especially considering a return to Turkey in order to take care of this situation would likely result in his arrest.
