Report: Jets to hire female defensive backs coach

Jets

The New York Jets may be a complete disaster on the field, but they surely are breaking through glass ceilings off the field. According to Leonard Greene of the NY Daily News, the Jets will hire Collette Smith to work with their defensive backs during training camp.

“I’m over the top. I’m humbled and I’m proud,” Smith said about the new gig. “This could have happened with any NFL team. But it just so happened that it was with my beloved New York Jets. This is bigger because of that.”

Smith joins Jen Welter as women who have made their imprint on the otherwise male dominated industry. Welter served as the Arizona Cardinals’ inside linebackers coach during training camp back in 2015.

Smith played football for the New York Sharks of the Independent Women’s Football League for three years before injury ended her career.

“One day a woman will come to a football team, and it won’t be a big story,” Smith continued. “It’ll just be football. When that day comes I’ll be more honored and even more proud.”

Congratulations are definitely in order for Smith and the Jets. Let’s hope this works out well for both sides. It’s pretty awesome news for those who support the idea of inclusion in professional sports.
