NFL star’s new contract contains no guaranteed money

Jamaal Charles

The Denver Broncos signed former Kansas City Chiefs four-time Pro Bowler Jamaal Charles to a one-year contract on Tuesday. It’s a move that adds depth to the team’s running back group with C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker.

The deal itself was said to be worth up to $3.8 million for one year.

Interestingly enough, it now looks like Charles received absolutely no guaranteed money on the deal. This means the Broncos can simply decide to cut him loose without paying a single dime to the former All Pro.

This just goes to show us how little 30-plus year old running backs with injury histories are valued in today’s NFL. Charles missed all but five games of the 2015 season after suffering a torn ACL. He then saw the field for just three games this past season after multiple setbacks in returning from said injury.

From 2012-14, Charles put up over 5,000 total yards with 39 touchdowns. While there’s little reason to believe he will return to that level of production, the Broncos are not risking much by signing the veteran.
