Gregg Popovich has become somewhat of a lightning rod these days when it comes to his fearless replies to politically charged questions.
On Sunday, before Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors, Popovich laid into Donald Trump. Without naming him, Popovich skewered Trump after being asked if he gets distracted from his job due to the current state of the USA and the world.
“Absolutely,” Popovich said, via Carl Steward of the San Jose Mercury News. “It’s interesting that you would ask that, because usually things happen in the world and you go to work and you’ve got your family and you’ve got your friends and you do what you do, but to this day, I feel like there’s a cloud, a pall over the whole country in a paranoid, surreal sort of way.
“It has nothing to do with the Democrats losing the election,” he continued. “It’s got to do with the way one individual conducts himself. And that’s embarrassing, it’s dangerous to our institutions and what we all stand for and what we expect the country to be. But for this individual, he’s in a game show, and everything that happens begins and ends with him, not our people and our country. Every time he talks about those things, that’s just a ruse. That’s just disingenuous, cynical and fake.”

Popovich recently had something to say about Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey as well.
It seems that, in addition to being one of the NBA’s most successful head coaches, Popovich is the media’s go-to guy when it comes to political commentary these days. Clearly, he’s not worried about any potential backlash from Spurs fans who might disagree with his worldview.
