Eagles flying high on the wings of friendly competition

Doug Pederson

The Philadelphia Eagles and head coach Doug Pederson are all about competition. Friendly competition. For the Eagles, this doesn’t start during training camp or the exhibition slate.

Much like the other 31 teams in the NFL, off-season workouts are about both having fun and creating the necessary competition to prepare for the upcoming season.

It’s in this that the Eagles are turning normally bland off-season workouts into games and contests for their players.

Pederson and his staff have set up fun weekly contests, turning said workouts into games. As the head coach notes, it’s all about creating “some friendly competition and build camaraderie.”

The idea here is to hand out a t-shirt to the weekly winners, giving each of the winners top-end parking spaces at the Eagles’ NovaCare practice facility. Per the team’s website, the grand prize winner will get something more than simple bragging rights.

“The grand prize, awarded to the player who has accumulated the most points throughout the spring, is a WWE-style championship belt. It will be announced in mid-June as the team breaks following the mandatory minicamp,” the team’s official website noted.

While this seems a bit generic and lame on the surface, it has to be music to the ears of those players left over from the Chip Kelly era. Fired towards the end of the 2015 season, Kelly was known for running his players into the ground during the offseason.

We’re not too sure whether Pederson can qualify as a player’s coach. But we do know that the Eagles have likely taken to his philosophy more than they did during the now forgotten Chip Kelly era.

That’s never a bad thing.
