Coach speak is something of an art form, but it’s something Tennessee head coach Butch Jones might need to brush up on before the 2017 season begins.
Speaking with media Tuesday, Jones gave a perplexing take on his program’s proximity to winning a championship.
Butch Jones: “The first element that goes into winning championships is contending to win championships and our program has done that.” Hmm.

While it’s true the Volunteers have managed to win nine games in each of the past two seasons, one would be hard pressed to successfully argue they have come close to contending for a championship.
Tennessee has finished the past two campaigns ranked No. 22 nationally on the Associated Press poll. The best thing we can say about what Jones has done so far in his four years at Tennessee is that he’s won three bowl games. But the Volunteers haven’t contended for a title or even had the opportunity to compete in a New Year’s Six contest.
Regardless, we have to give Jones credit for coming up with quite a quotable quote.
