Redskins QB Kirk Cousins does not expect to be traded

Kirk Cousins could earn $25-plus million on a new, long-term deal.

All the talk surrounding a potential Kirk Cousins trade earlier in the offseason has died down. It now looks like Cousins will play under the franchise tag for a second consecutive season.

While the Pro Bowl quarterback isn’t too happy about his current situation, he knows full well that a trade likely isn’t in the cards.

The talk leading up to free agency was that Cousins might be dealt to the San Francisco 49ers, where former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan mans the head coaching position.

Behind the scenes, Cousins was telling everyone who would listen that he wanted to join Shanahan in San Francisco. All the while, reports surfaced that he wouldn’t negotiate a long-term deal with Washington if Bruce Allen remained on as the team’s president.

Barring an extension between now and the deadline later this summer, Cousins will once again enter a contract year with the Redskins. That could lead to him hitting the free-agent market next March.

Despite all this, there’s still a small chance Cousins could end up on another team during the draft. That will heavily depend on how the quarterback situation plays out early in the first round. Even then, we wouldn’t bet on this coming to fruition. Cousins’ latest comments pretty much cements that.
