The Baltimore Ravens do not need to worry about filling former wide receiver Steve Smith’s shoes in the trash-talking department. Thankfully, wideout Mike Wallace has volunteered to take on that duty.
“I just have to curse a couple more people out, choke a couple more people out,” Wallace said, via Jamison Hensley of ESPN. “I was telling (wide receivers coach) Bobby (Engram) last meeting that I’ve got to come back in with a different attitude and I’ve got to start pushing people around a little bit more because Steve isn’t going to be here and somebody has to do it. So, I’m going to take over that role.”
It is a dirty job, but Wallace looks like he is willing to make the sacrifice for the team. Smith was one of the most vocal players in the league during a career that stretched from 2001-2016. He was feisty and not afraid to throw shade when he saw fit. Things even got physical at times.
Wallace has an edgy side as well as we have seen with his past teams. In particular, he parted on sour terms with the Miami Dolphins back in 2014.
Wallace picked up his numbers quite a bit when he signed on with Baltimore in 2016. He recorded 72 receptions for 1,017 yards and four touchdowns. He is currently the No. 1 wide receiver opposite Michael Campanaro on the team’s depth chart.
It will certainly be interesting to see if Wallace actually puts his money where he says his mouth will be this year.
