Report: White Sox release Brett Lawrie

Brett Lawrie

The White Sox have released second baseman Brett Lawrie according to The Score.

The team requested waivers on the 27-year-old Friday “for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.”

Lawrie played in just 94 games last season and finished with a .248/.310/.413 line. He also accumulated 12 home runs, 22 doubles, and 109 strikeouts with the club.

After acquiring top prospect Yoan Moncada in an offseason blockbuster trade, the initial mindset was to have Moncada play at the second base position while giving Lawrie a break. Moncada was anticipating on starting in Triple-A with the White Sox heading into the season, and that may be a different scenario now.
