Report: Saints want first-round pick for Brandin Cooks

Brandin Cooks

The New Orleans Saints have receiver Brandin Cooks on the trade block, but teams interested in his services better be willing to pay.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Saints are looking for a first-round pick in exchange for the speedster. Making things more difficult on that front, any team that does bring Cooks aboard better also be willing to make him one of the highest-paid receivers in the game.

Since being drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Cooks has emerged as one of Drew Brees’ go-to receivers. He caught 84 passes in 2015 and 78 last year, totaling 2,311 yards and 17 touchdowns in that span.

While it’s true Cooks has put up tremendous stats the past couple of seasons in New Orleans, it’s hard to say he’s worth that kind of cash. Brees has a tendency to make everyone look good, and Cooks isn’t necessarily a complete receiver. Plus there is the whole aspect of Cooks displaying diva tendencies as someone not content to be one of many targets in the Saints offense. He’s reportedly the driving force behind these trade talks to begin with (more on that here).

With that in mind, it’s hard to imagine the Saints will find a suitor willing to give up a first-round pick in exchange for Cooks.
