NFL exec: Patriots ‘only team that makes sense’ to sign Darrelle Revis

Darrelle Revis

Could Darrelle Revis be headed back to the state of Massachusetts to play for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots? According to a couple different reports, this reunion scenario isn’t all that far fetched.

In fact, as passed along by Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, one unnamed NFL executive is quoted as saying he Patriots “are the only team that makes sense” to sign Revis.

“…not many teams have a need for an expensive, aging cornerback with questionable work ethic,” writes Volin. “But Belichick could get the most out of Revis and find a way to use him — maybe not as a starting cornerback, but certainly as a depth piece at corner or strong safety.”

This falls in line with what Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, who went into this scenario a bit deeper, wrote Sunday morning.

“Bottom line, if Belichick is loading up for championship No. 6, which surely looks to be the case, and he thinks Revis can contribute, he’ll be in the conversation, especially if Butler departs,” she wrote.

Revis did give questionable — if you can even call it that — effort last year (watch here). He’s also reported to have ballooned in weight a bit, which he essentially admitted when exiting the courtroom last week when he said he’s down in weight now and in better shape.

The big trigger here that could potentially send Revis back to Foxborough is the Butler angle. If he does end up being traded to the New Orleans Saints, and all signs point to a deal getting done, then perhaps Bill Belichick would be interested in bringing Revis back on an extremely discounted contract. He’s already going to earn $6 million for not even suiting up this year, thanks to the guaranteed money left on his old deal with the New York Jets, and he’s pocketed an extraordinary amount of cash throughout his stellar career.

However, even if the Patriots move Butler and land more draft currency, then perhaps they would be more comfortable taking advantage of the 2017 NFL Draft and its abundance of first-class defensive back talent rather than invest any capital whatsoever into a has-been whose best days are well behind him.

So, if the Patriots are the “only team that makes sense” to sign Revis, then perhaps he’s up a creek without a paddle.
