Jason Garrett: Cowboys ‘working through’ Tony Romo situation

What should have potentially been an easy divorce between Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys is on the cusp of potentially turning ugly.

Reports surfaced earlier this week that Romo is distancing himself from the Cowboys and is unhappy about the current situation. It’s now three weeks into free agency and there’s really nothing indicating that we’re about to see a conclusion any time soon.

By now, it’s known that Romo will not be back with the Cowboys next season. Initial indications were that the team would look to release him. That gave into reports leading up to free agency that the former Pro Bowler might be traded.

Now, with draft season itself getting going, it seems that the two sides are at a standstill. As it relates to the Cowboys, it appears that they’re potentially looking to mend fences a tad here. Head coach Jason Garrett mentioned on Wednesday that the team was “working through” their situation with Romo. He also indicated that it was Jerry Jones, Romo and himself working things out behind the scenes.

Though, Garrett really didn’t want to get into specifics. Instead, he offered up this response about the quarterback.

“He can play the game at a high level,” Garrett said, via ESPN. “Durability has been an issue the past couple of years, so nobody really knows how he can handle the course of a 16-game season.”

It’s an interesting remark for Garrett to make. After all, the Cowboys wouldn’t necessarily be relying on Romo to play a 16-game season should they make the surprise decision to retain him as a backup. Instead, it seems that the Dallas head coach is speaking for other teams that have shown interest in Romo in the past.

In terms of any market for Romo’s services, the Denver Broncos have pretty much moved on from that possibility. This pretty much means that it’s the Texans or retirement for the veteran.
