Report: 49ers trying to land coveted Patriots coach for DC job

The San Francisco 49ers’ coaching staff under presumptive new head coach Kyle Shanahan will start rounding into form early this week.

Once Shanahan and his Atlanta Falcons conclude their Super Bow LI matchup with the New England Patriots, the current offensive coordinator will start building a staff in San Francisco.

There’s been a ton of rumors about who might join Shanahan with the 49ers. Despite being a first-time head coach, Shanahan himself will be a draw for other highly-respected assistants around the NFL. Such is the nature of the beast when you’re considered the top coordinator in the NFL.

As Fox Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer reported during the pre-game show for Super Bowl LI, the 49ers are interested in talking with current Patriots linebacker coach Brian Flores to be the team’s new defensive coordinator under Shanahan.

Flores is seen as a rising star within the NFL coaching ranks. He’s just 35 years of age and is coming off his first season as the Pats’ linebackers coach. Prior to that, Flores served as the team’s safeties coach for four seasons. He started his NFL career as a scouting assistant for the Patriots back in 2004.

Considering the interview wouldn’t be for a head coaching job, New England could technically block Flores from going to the 49ers. That’s most definitely in the cards with current Pats defensive coordinator Matt Patricia continuing to receive head coaching interviews.

Not only is Flores seen as a rising star around the NFL, those close to the situation believe that he’s a future head coach.

If the 49ers were able to add him, it would most definitely be a coup.
