Browns release WR Andrew Hawkins, save $1.8 million

Andrew Hawkins

The Cleveland Browns, seemingly always devoid of much talent at the receiver position, have released receiver Andrew Hawkins.

A serviceable, productive receiver throughout his six-year career, Hawkins caught 123 passes for 1,424 yards and five touchdowns the past three years in Cleveland.

By releasing Hawkins, the Browns cleared up $1.8 million of cap space, which is hardly worth mentioning since they have more than $100 million in cap space heading into the new league year to lead all NFL teams.

The move was not one-sided, however. Hawkins and the Browns mutually parted ways, a decision that was made last week.

Though he’s not a big-name player, it stands to reason Hawkins will receive a fair amount of interest around the league. He’s a quick, shifty receiver who had a 63-reception season in 2014, and at the age of 30 still has plenty of mileage left on his wheels.
