Report: Woody Johnson ‘leading contender’ to be UK ambassador for Donald Trump

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is reportedly a “leading contender” to represent the United States as an ambassador to the United Kingdom, per the New York Post.

“Johnson is under consideration for ambassador to the UK, multiple sources say. He was vice chairman of the Trump Victory Committee and hosted pricey fund-raisers in the Hamptons for donors including treasury secretary pick Steven Mnuchin, Carl Icahn and Anthony Scaramucci.”

If Johnson is appointed to the post, he wouldn’t be the first NFL owner to land such a gig. Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney was the ambassador under Barack Obama to Ireland from 2009-2012.

This is an interesting development as it relates to the NFL’s continued interest in presenting its product to the people of the UK with games at Wembley Stadium. The Jets won a game against the Miami Dolphins last year in London, and if Rooney is going to be residing in London perhaps New York will be more of a regular at Wembley in the years to come.
