Report: Tony Romo expected to play Sunday

Tony Romo

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will reportedly make his 2016 season debut in Sunday’s meaningless game against the Philadelphia Eagles. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Romo is expected to play a series or two.

This will be Romo’s first action since he suffered a back injury during the preseason. It could also potentially be his final appearance as a member of the Cowboys.

With Dak Prescott playing at an absurdly high level en route to leading the Cowboys to the No. 1 seed in the NFC, there’s little to suggest Romo stands a chance of earning back the starting job next season. Based on his past history of success, the former Pro Bowler will end up being the best option on either the free agent or trade market when March comes calling.

Dallas itself has conducted a 180 of sorts. It was expected to play the team’s starters for the majority of Sunday’s game against Philadelphia.

That’s now changed, with Romo and Mark Sanchez both likely to get reps under center. This is a smart decision, especially considering what we saw with both Marcus Mariota and Derek Carr last week.
