Report: Jets will not fire head coach Todd Bowles

Monday promises to be pretty gloomy for multiple head coaches around the NFL. It’s called Black Monday for a reason, and usually includes multiple firings.

With Gus Bradley of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan already out of jobs, teams around the league have gotten a head start on the firing process.

Fortunately for Todd Bowles, that apparently won’t be the case with him. According to a report from Gary Myers of the NY Daily News, the New York Jets will not fire Bowles after what has been a disastrous second season as the team’s head coach.

Following a surprising 10-win campaign in his first season in New York, Bowles has led a horrible performance from the sideline in 2016. The Jets currently boast a 4-11 record and have lost six of their past seven games. In fact, those six losses have come by an average of 17 points.

The only win during this span came against a lowly San Francisco 49ers squad, a game the Jets needed to come back in the fourth quarter to win.

One of the primary issues here has been the monumental bust of Ryan Fitzpatrick under center. While the veteran will get the final start of the season, he’s expected to be tossed from Jersey quicker than a family member that turned on Tony Soprano. Fitz has thrown 17 interceptions in 10 starts.

Adding to the disaster here, Geno Smith was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a torn ACL after just one start. Meanwhile, youngster Bryce Petty has been horrendous under center, throwing three touchdowns compared to seven interceptions in four starts. Heck, the Jets don’t even think second-round pick Christian Hackenberg is worthy of seeing the field as his rookie season draws to a conclusion.

Despite all this, it appears the Jets are willing to continue the Todd Bowles experiment for one more season.
