Michael Floyd on DUI arrest: ‘Everyone makes mistakes’

New England Patriots wide receiver Michael Floyd is in the midst of an off-field situation that could cost him his freedom.

Floyd was arrested back on December 12th for a DUI in the Scottsdale area. This led to the Arizona Cardinals waiving him. A short while later, the Patriots picked him up.

Though, New England’s decision to add the troubled Floyd to its roster came before reports surfaced that Floyd’s blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit. If convicted, he faces mandatory jail time (more on that here).

Now, speaking up about the DUI arrest for the first time, Floyd had this to say.

Floyd added the following.

“I understand what happened last week was last week and I’m excited about my opportunity here, being a Patriot,” the former first-round pick said, via Fox Sports. “Great group of guys, great group of coaches and an organization that treats people well.”

Sure people make mistakes. We’re not going to argue that point. Though, most of the time, adults learn from those mistakes. Floyd himself was involved in multiple alcohol-related issues while playing at Notre Dame. And while he remained clean off the field for the vast majority of his Cardinals career, being arrested on a DUI charge with the circumstances mentioned above is not a normal mistake.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick indicated recently that he was not aware of the circumstances surrounding Floyd’s arrest prior to his team deciding to pick the receiver up off waivers. It remains to be seen whether that will play a role in the team’s decision whether to retain him.

Floyd is set to become a free agent following the season. With these charges hanging over his head, it seems highly unlikely he’ll see a ton of action on the open market.
