Hue Jackson: Robert Griffin will start, on short leash against Chargers

Robert Griffin III

Fans of the Cleveland Browns will see more of Robert Griffin III. Hue Jackson announced on Monday that RGIII will start in Week 16 against the San Diego Chargers.

Nate Ulrich of The Akron Beacon Journal reported the news.

Ulrich also reported Jackson as saying Griffin will be on a short leash, with Cody Kessler at the ready.

Griffin certainly wasn’t spectacular in Week 15 against the Buffalo Bills, but he wasn’t bad. He completed 17-of-28 passes for 196 yards. The quarterback also ran eight times for 48 yards and a touchdown.

Playing Griffin makes complete sense. Jackson has already seen Kessler in action quite a bit throughout 2016. There isn’t a lot more to be learned from two more games. But Griffin has played only three times and is still coming off of an injury. Cleveland owes it to itself to see how much Griffin improves on a weekly basis as he gets further from the injury.

Given that the competitive portion of the 2016 season is long over, everything the Browns do over the next two weeks should be a tryout for 2017 and beyond.
