Report: LSU ‘closing in’ on Pitt OC Matt Canada for same position

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

With Lane Kiffin now the head coach at Florida Atlantic, new LSU head coach Ed Orgeron has been searching for the right candidate to become his offensive coordinator. He may be closing in on a prime target, Matt Canada.

Matt Canada is currently the offensive coordinator for the Pitt Panthers and was the only offensive coordinator to be named a finalist for the prestigious Broyles Award, given to the top assistant coach in college football.

Canada was at the helm of an offense that compiled the highest season point total in school history (508), and he still has one game left to be played. On top of that, Pitt is the only Power 5 team in the nation to score at least 28 points in every game this season.

According to Bruce Feldman of FoxSports.com, Orgeron and LSU were impressed with how innovative Canada is and also came away feeling like he’d be a good fit for the staff.

“He does a nice job and is very creative,” Pitt coach Narduzzi said of Canada last month. “He did it when he was at Wisconsin and ran for 500 yards (539 actually) on Bo Pelini’s defense (in a 70-31 win) in the (2012) Big Ten title game. I like what he does. I think it puts defenses in a bind.”

While not the first choice for the Tigers, Canada has been known as an innovative and productive playcaller at every stop in his career. He could ignite an LSU offense that had gone stagnant as of late.
