Report: Cowboys made an offer for Jets DL Sheldon Richardson

Sheldon Richardson

While the NFL trade deadline came and went without much action around the league on Tuesday, there were definitely conversations taking place in the lead up to the deadline.

Among the names most bandied about was New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson, one of the most-talented players at his position in the NFL.

In need of help along the defensive line due to the departure of Greg Hardy and suspension of Randy Gregory, the first-place Dallas Cowboys were reportedly in conversations with the Jets to acquire the former Pro Bowl defensive lineman.

It’s not yet known what the Jets might have asked for in a potential deal, but a first-round pick wouldn’t necessarily be out of the question here.

A team that had in the past been prone to give away high-round draft picks for veteran busts, the Cowboys have been much more stingy with these picks recently, instead attempting to build through the draft itself. And in reality, that’s worked pretty darn well for the franchise.

So it stands to reason the team likely wasn’t prepared to pay the Jets’ asking price here.

Richardson, 25, has recorded 28 tackles and 1.5 sacks in seven games this season. He’s been a major cog in the best run defense the league has to offer at the midway point of the season.
