Gary Kubiak: Broncos won’t announce starting QB until Sunday

Trevor Siemian Broncos

The Denver Broncos are not afraid to head into Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons with uncertainty at quarterback.

In fact, it might benefit the team in this all-important early-season matchup between two division leaders.

With starter Trevor Siemian dealing with a shoulder injury that forced him from last week’s game, it’s anyone’s guess who will start on Sunday.

The effective Siemian was replaced in the lineup by rookie Paxton Lynch, who proceeded to help Denver defeat an inferior Tampa Bay Buccaneers team.

Now, with just a few days remaining before their Week 5 matchup with Atlanta, the Broncos are not prepared to name a starter for the game.

“I’d take it all the way to game day,” head coach Gary Kubiak said on Wednesday, via Pro Football Talk. “I trust Trevor. He knows exactly what we’re doing and he’s very bright. He’s on top of everything today. He’s a part of the walk-throughs and everything that we’re doing so he’s on top of everything. We’ll just see where he’s at physically.”

This shouldn’t be considered a surprise to anyone. Kubiak played it closet to the vest during the summer before ultimately naming Siemian the starter for the regular season.

It could also force Atlanta into scheming to take on two quarterbacks that will run somewhat different offenses. Siemian is more of the drop-back passer while Lynch has proven himself to be a major threat on the ground.

Officially questionable to go on Sunday, Siemian has had himself a pretty good first quarter of the season. He’s completing 67 percent of his passes with over 800 yards and six touchdowns in four games.

Denver (4-0) takes on a red-hot Falcons team that’s won three in a row after losing its season opener. Whoever is starting under center will have to perform at a decent level for the defending champs to move their record to a clean 5-0 on the season.
