Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon has ruptured Achilles

A day removed from the team’s outstanding win over the Carolina Panthers, the Atlanta Falcons got some bad news in the form of an Achilles injury for linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.

On Monday, Weatherspoon told ESPN’s Vaughn McClure his right Achilles tendon ruptured.

Weatherspoon made his way back to Atlanta this offseason after spending a year in Arizona with the Cardinals.

He was drafted by the Falcons in the first round back in 2010. For the next four years, he made 44 starts for the Falcons, racking up 290 tackles, eight sacks and two interceptions.

Before his injury, Weatherspoon had tallied 27 tackles this year.

This injury comes at a time in which rookie De’Vondre Campbell is also dealing with an injury of his own. He was held out of Sunday’s game against Carolina with the same ankle injury that has plagued him the past few weeks. Linebacker Paul Worrilow also is out with a groin injury.

A ruptured Achilles is a season-ending injury. This puts Atlanta in a precarious position entering a pivotal matchup against the Denver Broncos next weekend.
