NFL threatens NFLPA with suspensions for players in PED interview fiasco

James Harrison, Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers and Mike Neal have a definitive deadline. The NFL told the NFLPA Monday that those players have until August 25 to give interviews regarding their involvement in the Al Jazeera report that linked them to PED use. If they fail to comply, they will get suspended.

Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports broke this news Monday afternoon.

A part of the letter issued by the NFL was also released by Pelissero.

This is a serious issue. Even if the allegations against the players end up being dismissed (as was the case with Peyton Manning), the NFL can’t just ignore this. No sport can ignore it, but a violent sport like the NFL has to take extra caution regarding HGH allegations.

The problem isn’t so much that they want an interview, it’s that it took so long to ask for it. This should have been done months ago so as not to interfere with the training camps of the players involved.

At this point, the beef between the NFL and NFLPA is nothing more than a power play, and the players are stuck in the middle.

Of course, the NFLPA knew this would happen if Manning agreed to an interview with the league on the same matter. This is why they strongly advised him against complying.

And now it appears we have a high-stakes game of chicken developing. Who will blink first?
