Kansas football settling first-team reps with Rock-Paper-Scissors

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas Jayhawks still don’t know who will start at quarterback when they host the Rhode Island Rams Saturday. Both Montell Cozart and Ryan Willis have a shot at becoming the starter for Kansas football, and their practice reps have been determined of late by a game of chance.

We’re not sure if being good at Rock-Paper-Scissors will have any bearing on who ends up leading Kansas’ offense this fall. But that’s the preferred method of dividing up practice reps during certain situations right now, with less than a week remaining before the regular season begins.

Based on the results, it looks like Cozart has an edge when it comes to these games.

“I’m well over 50 percent,” Cozart said of his winning percentage, per Jesse Newell of the Kansas City Star. “I’m at least probably about 75.”

Head coach David Beaty confirmed that neither Cozart nor Willis have separated themselves as the undisputed starter.

Willis appeared to be a shoo-in to start after finishing as the starter the final eight games last year. Unfortunately he suffered a wrist injury during the offseason and allowed Cozart to push for the starting job.

“[Willis] is by no means a finished product, at all. If he was, he would be named the starting quarterback, and he’s not,” Beaty said. “We don’t have a starter yet. We didn’t have that separation.”

This is either a really good thing or a troubling development. Either Kansas’ offense will have the benefit of having two excellent quarterbacks, or this is a sign that neither player is that good.

Thus far in their careers, the two quarterbacks haven’t exactly shined, combining to throw 15 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
