Jimmy Garoppolo has no idea whether he’s starting Thursday

The New England Patriots are set to take the field Thursday for their first preseason game of the year.

However, backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is quite clueless as to whether he will start said game.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” the third-year quarterback said when he was asked if he would be starting against the New Orleans Saints, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

We know for a fact that Garoppolo will be under center in Week 1 of the regular season and will hold down the fort for the first four games. Tom Brady will be serving a league mandated four-game suspension for his alleged involvement in the Deflategate scandal.

Garoppolo had this to say regarding his development thus far during training camp.

“There’s always room for improvement. As a quarterback, especially as a young quarterback, I’m only going into my third year, so there’s always room for improvement; little things here and there that you just pick up on and correct the next day.”

It would make sense for the Patriots to feature Garoppolo heavily during the preseason to get him as up to speed as possible. However, we are likely to see some small doses of Brady along the way.

In the end, it is typical of head coach Bill Belichick to stay mum on the topic of his starting lineup. We will find out soon enough what the Pats have planned for the quarterback position come Thursday evening.
