Jerry Jones wishes he ‘had a little more tolerance with Jimmy Johnson’

Jerry Jones

Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson haven’t had a good relationship since the Dallas Cowboys owner and former head coach parted ways in 1994. And that’s an understatement. They have traded shots back and forth through the media ever since, but now it seems Jones wishes things had been a bit different.

Speaking on KTCK-AM 1310 The Ticket (h/t SportsDay), Jones spoke about what was going on with him personally at that time that had a big impact on how he acted, taking some measure of responsibility for the split.

“As much as anything the times of buying the team, if I was trying to hold this glass of water — I was 45 when I bought [the Cowboys] — I would be spilling it even though I was holding it with both hands,” Jones said on the radio show. “Now I was scared to death. I thought I was going to go broke for sure plus I knew I didn’t know what I was doing about getting involved. On the other hand it was a traumatic time. I tear up sometime when I’m talking about it, even on a speech.

“I lost my tolerance for a lot of things for a lot of things I probably should have tolerated. I probably should have had a little more tolerance with Jimmy Johnson. Seriously.”

This is quite the confession here by Jones.

One of the big reasons why Johnson is still not a member of the Cowboys Ring of Honor is that Jones has long been bitter about what he considered disloyalty.

Johnson hinted that he might be interested in the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching position after feeling bitter about Jones wanting roster control. Remember, Johnson built a roster that won two Super Bowls in a row but left because he and Jones couldn’t get along.

It sure sounds like Jones wishes he had been more understanding about where Johnson was coming from. And he should feel that way. After all, the ‘Boys have yet to get back on track since Barry Switzer rode Johnson’s roster to another Super Bowl in 1995. Ever since then, the franchise has won just three playoff games and hasn’t sniffed a Super Bowl berth.

If Johnson and Jones had been able to get along, who knows how many titles they would have won together?

So yeah, tolerance would have been a good thing. Live and learn.
