Jadeveon Clowney to miss first preseason game due to ‘minor’ knee soreness

Jadeveon Clowney

Houston Texans pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney has a history of being injured, so fans might be inclined to panic now that he’s dealing with knee soreness heading into Sunday’s first preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Clowney has practiced this week with Houston but is being held out of Friday’s scrimmage with the 49ers as well as the preseason game, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

“Clowney is making steady progress and is getting over minor soreness in his knee he experienced that prompted the team to rest him, according to sources not authorized to speak publicly.”

As most are likely aware, Clowney’s health isn’t something the Texans will mess around with. He missed most of his rookie campaign with knee injuries and ended up undergoing microfracture surgery. He then missed three games last year dealing with minor injuries.

Speaking about this latest issue, which the team is emphasizing isn’t a big deal, head coach Bill O’Brien wasn’t interested in divulging much information.

“Just giving him a couple of days off,” said Texans coach Bill O’Brien while declining to specify what’s preventing Clowney from practicing. “I wouldn’t make too much of it.”

Already in danger of being slapped with the “bust” label, Clowney needs to stay healthy this year to live up to the immense hype that surrounded him coming out of South Carolina. The Texans invested in him in a major way by taking him No. 1 overall in 2014, despite a dire need for a quarterback — a decision that ultimately led to the team overpaying for the untested Brock Osweiler this past offseason.
