49ers won’t sign Nick Foles: ‘Eggs in Kap and Blaine’s basket’

For the record, there will be no reunion between San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly and his former quarterback, Nick Foles.

“I’m a big fan of Nick, but right now our eggs are in Kap and Blaine’s basket, and we’re going to see what those guys can do,” Kelly said per Matt Maiocco of csnbayarea.com.”

Kelly has taken on the tall task of supervising a quarterback competition between Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. The two quarterbacks will receive even reps over the upcoming weeks until a winner is determined (more on that here).

Foles recorded 14 wins and four losses during two partial seasons working with Kelly. His best stretch of success came in 2013 when he completed 64 percent of his passes and threw for 27 touchdowns compared to only two interceptions.

In 2015, Kelly shipped Foles to the Rams in exchange for quarterback Sam Bradford.

After an underwhelming 2015 campaign, Kelly was fired by the Eagles.

Confident at this point that Kaepernick or Gabbert will rise to the top, it is reasonable to see why Kelly is passing on Foles.

Meanwhile, Foles remains on the free agent market. He is hoping a team in need will be able to look past his horrific 2015 campaign when the Rams eventually benched him in favor of Case Keenum.
