WATCH: Rockets’ Chinanu Onuaku busts out granny style free throw at Summer League

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Houston Rockets rookie big man Chinanu Onuaku, desperate to find a solution to his free-throw-shooting woes, went with a granny style technique Friday.

Playing in the Summer League for the Rockets in Las Vegas, Onuaku busted out the shot, which is hardly ever utilized in NBA games.

Onuaku did manage to split the pair.

Those who followed him in college know this isn’t a new thing for him. After failing to convert half his attempts from the stripe as a freshman at Louisville, he opted for this unorthodox approach and actually improved his numbers. Though, at 58.9 percent, there is still clearly room for improvement.

Hilariously, none other than Dwight Howard was on hand during the broadcast, and we’re likely all aware of his free-throw issues (career 56.8 percent). Perhaps he’ll attempt to make a change himself after converting a career-low 48.9 percent last year.
