Report: Spurs to sign Pau Gasol to two-year, $30 million deal

The San Antonio Spurs are apparently making some big news themselves on the Fourth of July. Just hours after Kevin Durant announced his intention to sign with the Golden State Warriors, the Spurs have reportedly answered.

A two-year, $30 million deal for Pau Gasol is a darn good move for San Antonio as it looks to stay with Golden State among the favorites in the Western Conference.

The Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls and Warriors were all interested in the veteran big man. In fact, Portland reportedly offered Gasol $20 million per season on Sunday.

This comes on the heels of news that Tim Duncan is strongly considering retirement.

Gasol, 35, remains one of the top big men in the entire game. He averaged 16.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists for the Bulls a season ago.

The six-time All-Star also fits in well in Gregg Popovich’s scheme. An elite passer from the five position, Gasol will join Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge to form the game’s top frontcourt.
