Report: Mavericks sign Dirk Nowitzki to two-year deal

Dirk Nowitzki

Future Hall of Fame big man Dirk Nowitzki will return to the Dallas Mavericks for at least two more seasons.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, Dallas has agreed to bring Dirk back on a two-year, $40 million contract.

This won’t necessarily quiet down critics of the Mavericks after they missed out on their huge free-agent targets earlier in the summer with both Hassan Whiteside and Mike Conley deciding to return to their respective teams.

Though, it does come a day after Dallas was able to add two former Golden State Warrior starters in Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut to the mix.

Nowitzki, 38, was always going to return to Dallas. The reason it took so long is that he wanted to give Dallas an ability to add core pieces around him. Once that happened, the two sides could come to terms on a deal that would work out for both the player and the organization.

He returns to Dallas for a 19th season after averaging 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Mavericks in 2015-16. It really does show the loyalty Dirk has for the only organization he’s suited up for in his near two decades in the Association.

In reality, he returns to Dallas knowing full well that it doesn’t stand much of a chance to contend in the Western Conference.
