Drew Brees: No contract talks with Saints in three months

Drew Brees

Drew Brees was thought to be a lock to earn a contract extension this offseason, but the New Orleans Saints didn’t oblige. Now we’re learning there hasn’t been any meaningful conversations on this front in a long while.

This has Brees feeling a bit perplexed.

Not sure why things have not progressed,” said Brees, per ESPN’s Mike Triplett. “They made an offer in March, we made an offer shortly thereafter. And besides the Josh Norman deal [when the Saints approached Brees about restructuring his contract to try to fit the star cornerback under their salary cap], there has been no talk about a contract since.”

The Saints were expected to extend Brees’ contract after the 2015 season because the quarterback carries a $30 million cap hit into the upcoming campaign. However, the franchise did very little in free agency and ended up being able to carry his gargantuan contract into the season without running into salary cap problems.

For this reason, the pressure to do a new deal subsided in a big way.

On top of that, it’s possible that the Saints are actually in limbo as it pertains to Brees potentially hitting a Peyton Manning-esque physical wall at the age of 37.

With this in mind, it’s actually smart for the Saints to see what happens in 2016 with the veteran signal caller running the show. The franchise hasn’t put together a winning campaign since 2013, despite big passing numbers from Brees.

If things continue to trend down, then it could be time for the team to look into finally developing a young quarterback to take the baton for the future.

Still, Brees hopes the Saints will be willing to make a deal before the start of the regular season, a stance he has held since late May.

At this point, however, it seems the franchise is willing to let things play out. After all, it’s not like his value is going to balloon after the 2016 season when he’ll be one year closer to 40.
