The West Virginia flood has been and continues to be a devastating natural disaster. To help out those in need, the West Virginia football program is stepping up to round up donations.
Already, the floods have claimed the lives of at least 26 people, per CNN, and is the deadiest flash flooding in the United States since 2010. Tens of thousands of homes and businesses remain without power. Some folks stranded in their homes for days, and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said some parts of the state are experiencing the worst flooding in a century.
In an effort to do help out those in need, West Virginia football players, coaches and staff are hosting a “water and goods drive” on Saturday at the university, per TMZ.
“Our players will be there helping load the donations onto the truck.” Alex Hammond, Associate AD for football operations said. “We wanted to be able to do our part. We wanted to utilize our facility and building to let people bring their donations down to us. The quicker we can help, the more we can do our part, so we wanted to get it set up immediately.”
The floodwaters are receding now and the severe thunderstorms that caused all the destruction are finished wreaking havoc. That said, it will take no short amount of time to get infrastructure back to normal, as roads have been washed away and at least one bridge collapsed.
