U.S. Open play suspended for Thursday

There will be no more play at the U.S. Open on Thursday.

In total, there were three weather delays at Oakmont on Thursday. The first two were relatively short and golfers were able to return to the course, but the third was too much to overcome.

Only nine golfers finished their opening rounds. University of Texas amateur Scottie Scheffler shot a one-under 69 in his opening round, which makes him the clubhouse leader.

That clubhouse lead is not likely to last long. Overall leader Andrew Landry is at three-under par and was on the ninth (his final) green with a makeable birdie putt before play was stopped.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth is at one-over par through 11 holes. Rory McIlroy is through 12 holes and is three-over.

While a Sunday finish is still possible, it will be difficult and will certainly depend on good weather at Oakmont over the weekend.  A total of 78 golfers — including world No. 1 Jason Day — have yet to begin their opening rounds.

While Scheffler is the only golfer in red numbers who has finished with his round, a total of eight golfers are currently under par. When the U.S. Open was last played at Oakmont in 2007, there were eight under par rounds combined over the four days.
