Prior to his breakout Game 4 performance in the Finals, two-time reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry had not done much for his Golden State Warriors.
Now, one day before his team takes the court in Oakland with a chance to close out the under-manned Cleveland Cavaliers, Curry himself is coming off a breakout performance that saw him score 38 points in a huge Warriors win on Thursday night.
Whether Monday’s outing will wrap up one of the most historical seasons in Association history remains to be seen. What we do know is that Curry will not take part in this summer’s Rio Summer Olympics.
We are now starting to understand a bit more as to why he’s passing up on the opportunity.
“A source says Curry consulted a orthopedist in Southern California. Steph’s MRI showed issues with both shoulders as well as his knees, some of which may require surgery this summer,” Mark Heisler of the LA Daily News reported Sunday.
Prior to his tremendous performance in helping lead the Warriors to a 3-1 series advantage on Thursday, Curry had struggled tremendously in the Finals. In fact, he averaged less than 13 points per game in the first three outings of the series.
It will be interesting to see whether Curry does indeed need off-season surgery this summer. He missed multiple games earlier in the playoffs with both a knee and ankle injury.
This could be one of the reasons why he struggled so much prior to Thursday’s game. Not an excuse, simply a reason.
