Kirk Cousins: “No progress” on contract talks

Kirk Cousins could earn $25-plus million on a new, long-term deal.

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins will be playing under the franchise tag this upcoming season. He signed the tender back in the spring almost immediately after it was presented to him.

This will enable the 2015 breakout performer to earn nearly $20 million in 2016, the 11th-highest figure among quarterbacks in the NFL.

While the Skins and their starting quarterback have been engaged in negotiations on a long-term deal, Cousins indicated just recently that there’s no progress regarding said talks.

“No progress to speak of,” Cousins said this weekend, via CSNMidAtlantic.com.

Coming off a 2015 campaign that saw him put up career highs in passing yards (4,166) and touchdowns (29) while leading the league in completion percentage (69.8), it’s pretty clear Cousins wants to cash on his recent success.

However, Washington is justified in wanting to see a repeat performance before it doles out tens of millions in guaranteed cash.

This leads us to believe nothing will get done until next March at the earliest. Then again, the Skins will have the option to place the franchise tag on Cousins at that point.
