Jason Terry: Dwight Howard would put Mavericks in championship contention

Dwight Howard

One of the teams Dwight Howard might be looking at this summer in free agency is the Dallas Mavericks. Jason Terry, Howard’s teammate the past two seasons with the Houston Rockets, thinks Dallas would be a championship contender if Howard did sign on with the Mavericks.

“He would look good [in a Mavericks uniform]. Anybody that has his physical stature along side of Dirk (Nowitzki) is always a huge factor. If he comes to Dallas they’ll be talking about Dallas in the likes of winning a championship,” Terry said, via Dwain Price of the Star-Telegram.

Howard is still officially a member of the Rockets organization, but he is expected to opt out of his final contract year to become an unrestricted free agent.

He struggled mightily last season, putting up a points total lower than any year since his rookie campaign. He averaged 13.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.6 blocks and a steal per contest. And while many believe he is starting to fade physically, Terry doesn’t see it that way at all.

“There are three dominant centers that I’ll say, and that’s DeMarcus Cousins (of the Sacramento Kings), DeAndre Jordan (of the Los Angeles Clippers) and Dwight Howard,’’ Terry said. “Not to mention Memphis’ Marc Gasol, but he’s a different kind of center because of his back to the basket game and the way he can pass. But those other three, they’re athletic, they run the floor, and Dwight fits that perfectly.’’

Howard would seem to fit well into Dallas’ lineup, and that is one of a few top landing spots we have highlighted in the past (read here).

It’s worth mentioning that Dirk Nowitski has been rumored to be down on the idea of Howard as a running mate. But rumors are always questionable this time of year as teams and agents pump the media both ways to try and gain an advantage.

Howard isn’t the premier free agent this summer — that honor certainly belongs to Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder. That said, there won’t be many other players as hotly pursued as Howard inevitably will be. It’s going to be a roller coaster ride for fans until he actually signs on the bottom line.
