Cam Newton: ‘I haven’t peaked’ as NFL QB

Cam Newton

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton knows there is always room for improvement.

Speaking with reporters this week during team minicamp, Newton discussed his desire to continue evolving as an NFL quarterback.

“I haven’t peaked,” Newton said this week, via the Charlotte Observer. “I haven’t climaxed as a player, and that’s what I need to get better at.

“I always can find ways to take my game to the next level, and just getting everybody on the same page as one of the captains on this team, I take that very pridefully. And knowing there are a lot of people looking at me, as well as others, to lead the team.”

Before the 2015 season, Newton was considered by most as a guy who still had yet to truly tap into his potential. One of the most gifted quarterbacks athletically in the history of the league, he had yet to show much development as a passer at that point.

Then he started to blossom last season and put up his finest campaign as a pro, culminating with a Super Bowl berth leading the NFL’s most potent scoring offense. Newton combined for 4,473 yards and 45 touchdowns rushing and passing last year during the regular season. He also threw only 10 interceptions, the lowest total of his career.

But there is certainly plenty he can get better at going forward. Even during what most would consider a breakthrough campaign, Newton completed less than 60 percent of his passes. He also needs to work on his touch on intermediate and short passes.

By no means is he a finished product, but nobody should expect any regression. If anything, all the pieces are in place for Newton to thrive going forward. The Panthers have a fine collection of offensive weapons for the quarterback to work with, and we should see big developmental leaps in receivers Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess in the coming years.

The future is bright indeed for Newton and the Panthers. He hasn’t come close to peaking, and it’s going to be fun watching him reach his full potential.
