Mark Sanchez taking first-team reps with Broncos

During Tuesday’s minicamp, Denver Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez took the first-team reps while rookie Paxton Lynch practiced with the third team.

However, this is in no way an indicator of what the Broncos’ depth chart will look like when camp starts, at least according to head coach Gary Kubiak.

“I’ll have a depth chart going into training camp,” Kubiak told reporters on Tuesday, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “That doesn’t mean we won’t operate totally evenly. But they will be listed somehow. We’ll sort that out here at some point. They’re all going to rep. They’re all very talented. They’re all going to rep, so we’ll see who wins the job.”

Besides Sanchez and Lynch, Trevor Siemian has reportedly been gaining Kubiak’s attention and practiced with the second team on Tuesday. Per Florio, Kubiak would not commit to Sanchez topping the depth chart.

In evaluating the Broncos’ quarterback situation, it would seem logical to assume the quarterback with the most NFL experience would be the front runner. Even if that means it is Sanchez, who has thrown nearly as many picks (84) as touchdowns (86) and is playing on his third NFL team in eight years.

Kubiak is bound to force the quarterbacks to take nothing for granted as they continue rotational practices with the first through third teams. Hopefully as the Broncos training camp plays out, it will become more definitive as to which quarterback looks to be the most-promising to start under center in Week 1.

Though, if we consulted with running back C.J. Anderson, Kubiak’s decision to pick a starter today would be a tough one.

“It’s all been close,” running back C.J. Anderson told reporters. “Trevor (Siemian] has been good, Paxton [Lynch] has been showing up and he has his days. Mark (Sanchez) has his days. They all have their days. Today was their best day. That’s what I was saying earlier. Today, to me, they all had a good day.”

This all plays right into previous reports suggesting that the Broncos plan to hold an open competition for the starting gig. It is, however, a bit interesting that rookie first-round pick Paxton Lynch is taking third-team reps. That should change some as the summer progresses.
