Maybe now we know why so many people are jumping ship over at ESPN. Matthew Garrahan of the Financial Times is reporting the media giant has struck a deal with Vice.

“Vice Sports will produce several series for ESPN to air across television, digital and mobile,” the Financial Times reports.

“John Skipper, ESPN’s president, said Vice did an ‘extraordinary job presenting stories through their own, very unique lens’, adding, ‘I applaud Shane for understanding that television is the smartest path to worldwide leadership.”’

This is a major shift in content for ESPN. Vice is known for taking a personal look at some of the back stories behind the big news.

The “worldwide leader in sports” will gain the added exposure with Viceland airing “30 for 30” episodes as part of the deal. ESPN, owned by Walt Disney, is moving more into the realm of sports and producing compelling video content towards that audience.

It’s going to be interesting to see what the end result of this collaborative effort will look like.
