Jose Reyes to begin Minor League rehab assignment Wednesday

Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes will be eligible to return from administrative leave on Wednesday. When he does, it will be on a rehab assignment with Colorado’s Triple-A club, the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Harding also added that the rehab assignment will not require Reyes go on the 40-man roster, meaning that no player will lose his spot on the roster.

The Rockies are in a tight spot as it relates to Reyes. Trevor Story is the likely National League Rookie of the Year front runner right now. Additionally, Brendan Rodgers, their top prospect and No. 3 pick in last summer’s draft, is also a shortstop.

When we factor into account Reyes’ injury history and his age (32), it’s hard to think that he’s got much of a future with the Rockies organization — and that’s before we consider the baggage that will come with returning from a suspension for domestic violence.

On the other hand, if they’re going to trade Reyes, he’ll need a chance to show that he can still play. Reyes is owed $22 million per year through 2017, and unless the Rockies are willing to take on a huge chunk of that, the market for Reyes can’t be terribly hot right now.

Of course, that has the potential to change if Reyes somehow shows that he can still play the game at a high level. If Reyes struggles, his age, injury history, and potential baggage would make him very hard for most teams to touch.

For the sake of his trade value, it’s important that Reyes play well both in the minors and with any Major League audition he does get.
