Joe Montana would take Eli Manning over Tony Romo

Joe Montana knows a thing or two about playing the quarterback position in the NFL. So his opinion carries significant weight. And in his opinion, Eli Manning is better than Tony Romo.

Montana, speaking in a radio spot with CBS Sports’ Boomer & Carlton, said he’d take Manning over Romo if he had the choice.

Cowboys nation might rise to Romo’s defense, but we won’t.

Montana’s assertion here is absolutely correct.

Manning hasn’t missed a single start due to injury in his 12-year career. For comparison’s sake, Romo has missed more than a few. Just last year, he missed all but four games to a broken collarbone, which he injured twice. He’s also missed time due to a recurring back problem.

Montana knows longevity is key.

He also knows the value of a cool head under pressure. Heck, he was Joe Cool. So he’s certainly going to value Manning’s ability to get things done when it mattered most during the two championship runs he was a part of. Romo he hasn’t won a single Super Bowl, let alone two.

Also, while the general consensus might be to think Romo puts up bigger numbers than Manning, he doesn’t.

From 2011-14, the last four years Romo was healthy, he averaged 4,155 yards, 31 touchdowns and 14.5 interceptions per year.

Manning had a poor season in 2013, so we’ll toss that out as an ourlier. Between 2011-15, taking out his 2013 campaign, Manning averaged 4,432 yards, 30 touchdowns and 14.75 interceptions per year.

Statistically, they’ve been pretty much the same guy.

So you add in Romo being injury-prone and the fact he’s rarely been at his best during the playoffs and Joe Cool’s point is all the more salient.
