Blue Jays GM: John Gibbons is ‘absolutely part of the solution’

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

At 22-25 and in last place in the American League East, the Toronto Blue Jays are one of baseball’s most disappointing teams. But general manager Ross Atkins does not see manager John Gibbons as part of the problem. Actually, the Blue Jays front office has the exact opposite feeling.

It’s not necessarily surprising that the Toronto brass is (apparently) not considering a change at the manager position. After all, Gibbons is only one year removed from guiding the Blue Jays to a 93-69 record and a trip to the American League Championship Series. It seems unlikely that he just forgot how to manage over the span of a few months.

Though, he might want to consider toning it down after being ejected three times in the span of a week.

With that said, it is surprising to hear the team make such a public declaration. Comments like this would seem to put them into a corner and in this case, quite unnecessarily.

Toronto still has a team of proven veterans that includes Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, Troy Tulowtizki, Russell Martin, and reigning American League MVP Josh Donaldson. They should be better.

That’s not to say that Gibbons is to blame for the poor performance. Still, managing a team with that kind of talent to a sub-.500 record nearly two months into the season would certainly justify being on the hot seat.

Realistically, saying something like “no comment” or “we’re evaluating everyone everyday” would make far more sense.
