Von Miller: Brock Osweiler same type of leader as Peyton Manning

Von Miller has played with Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and young Brock Osweiler, and he believes the latter signal-caller to be comparable to the former when it comes to leadership — no small claim.

Manning earned a reputation over the course of his career as one the greatest field generals in the history of the league. His leadership in the film room, the locker room, the practice field and the playing field inspired his teammates to be at their best on game days.

Speaking on NFL Network, via the Denver Post, Miller discussed the similarities between Manning and Osweiler in terms of leadership.

I see the same type of leadership qualities that I see in Peyton,’ Miller said. “He knows how to work the room. He can relate to everybody in the locker room — not just the offensive guys, not just the defensive guys. He can relate to everybody in the room. Brock is one of those guys, and he goes out there and he leads in that type of way.”

The two quarterbacks are currently in limbo as it relates to their relationship with the Broncos.

Manning is still mulling over his decision to retire. It’s being reported that he has already made his decision to retire and will be announcing that career move later this week, but John Elway and the Broncos are giving him all the time he needs to make his decision.

If Manning does decide he wants to play another year, then he’s set to earn $19 million in 2016 — quite a bit of money for an aging passer whose limitations were evident last year.

On the flip side, Osweiler is set to become a free agent on March 9 and can start talking to teams on March 7 about a contract. The Broncos want to lock him up before that date if at all possible before he hits the open market and can be lured by another team with money to burn and a need a quarterback.

Still, Elway continues to say he’s not worried about the current situation.

“We’re really not in a hurry,” Elway said. “Everything is still real fluid. We know where Brock is. Brock knows what we have to offer. We still have a great deal of interest in Brock. We’d like to do something with Brock.”

Osweiler showed some promise last year, passing for 1,967 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s been groomed by the team to take over eventually, whenever Manning did retire, since the 2012 season when he was drafted No. 57 overall. It was quite an investment by Denver at the time, so it would be a shame if he were to leave for greener pastures and Manning did end up retiring.

If Osweiler can continue developing on the physical side and displays Manning-type leadership over the course of his career, then there is little doubt he’ll succeed, wherever he lands.
