Reported Eagles-Dolphins trade could be off

Most Philadelphia Eagles fans were pretty excited on Monday when it seemed that the team was able to rid itself of an overpriced Byron Maxwell and an injury-plagued Kiko Alonso in a trade with the Miami Dolphins.

The move would have saved Philadelphia countless millions against the cap while putting an end to two major mistakes former head coach Chip Kelly made as the team’s chief decision maker.

That deal could now be off due to concerns over Maxwell’s health:

There’s a whole heck of a lot to look at here. If this deal is indeed off, what do the Eagles do with Maxwell and Alonso? After all, both now know they aren’t wanted.

Secondly, it could create a major trickle-down effect for both teams.

The Dolphins were said to be releasing cornerback Brent Grimes when reports of this trade surfaced. Now that it’s in question, will Grimes himself get axed? If not, is he actually going to want to return to South Beach now?

More than that, the Eagles were set to save nearly $10 million against the cap once this trade was made official at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. That’s a pretty big chunk of change to have to take back, especially on the day free agency officially opens.

There could be something else holding this up. If the Dolphins are worried about Maxwell’s shoulder, they could demand that they send less in return — a bounty that has not yet been reported.
